FIRE RESISTANT TIMBER ASSEMBLY |
 1-Hour Fire Rated Timber Assembly |
The requirements in heavy timber construction in model building codes do not constitute one hour fire resistance. However procedures are availbale to estimate the size of heavy timber columns and beams required for projects in which 1-hour fire resistance is required. Structural member's are measured by the time it can support it's design load during a fire. The standard test method for 1-Hour fire resistant assembly is the ASTM E119 |
Heavy timber construction has long been recognized by model buiding codes as fire resistant assemblies. The test standard is known as the ASTM E119 test method and it encompasses the whole assembly. To comply with the ASTM E119 standard, limitations are placed on the minimum size including depth and thickness of all load bearing capacity of the wood members. In a fire, wood typically chars at the rate of 1/40th of an inch per minute therefore an untreated timber will accumulate 3/4" of char in 30 minutes and 1-1/2" of char in an hour. The char insulates the remaining portion of the timber from the fire and that is now the load bearing capacity of the member. The builder, architect or engineer would have to make allowances to increase the size of the timber whether it be for a column or a beam to reflect the remaing portion of the member's load bearing capacity whether it be on 3 sides or 4 sides, thereby increasing the cost per member significantly. |
| Flame Safe's fire retardant treated heavy timber is a low cost alternative to impart fire resistance to the assembly (ASTM E119) by reducing the necessity of increasing the size and the cross sectional are of the structural members. Tests based on the ASTM E84 (ANSI/UL 723 and UL1256) conducted at Intetek Testing Services, Southwest Research Institute and Universal Laboratories have indicated the lowest flame spread ratings of any fire retardant wood product on the market. In fact recent tests at Intertek have shown a flame spread rating of 0 and char thickness of 1-1/2" when exposed to fire for the 30 minute duration (ASTM E2768). |
Flame Safe's XT lumber and timber has been tested and classified by Intertek Testing Services as complying with the ASTM E84 and the ASTM E2768 (30 minute extended test procedure) and the ASTM D2898 (accelerated weathering) achieving a flame spread rating of 0 and a smoke development index of 120 |
